Our Story

Built in 1900, this historic building on the Canton Square has stood for more than a century as a symbol of the city's commercial growth and community spirit. Today, it’s home to Canton Square Lofts and its event space, The Lounge 1900—named in honor of the building’s construction year and timeless charm.

In 1913, Roberts Insurance was established at 3354 Liberty Street by B.L. Roberts, a prominent businessman and civic leader. A native of Pennsylvania, Roberts moved to Canton at age 18 and quickly rose through the banking ranks before establishing the agency. He also helped organize the city’s first telephone system and served in leadership roles across banking, civic clubs, and local development.

His son, Harry Roberts, continued the legacy, leading the agency for decades even throughout his service in World War II. In 1997, longtime employee U.H. “Junior” Harvey purchased the property and operated Roberts Insurance until his retirement in 2017.

The building itself reflects the early 20th-century character of the Canton Courthouse Square Historic District—defined by its turn-of-the-century vernacular architecture, and early industrial-era charm. Canton thrived in the late 1800s and early 1900s as a railroad and lumber manufacturing hub, attracting families and growing rapidly in business and infrastructure.

In 2024, Canton native and entrepreneur Bob Lloyd purchased the property with a vision to preserve its historic character while updating it for modern use. Now known as Canton Square Lofts, the space is managed by Bob and his daughter, Chris, who are dedicated to honoring the building’s legacy while welcoming guests to experience the heart of Canton.
